Functional protein microarrays capitalize on decades of research helping to understand humoral immunity. Over the last 30 years alone we have learned that antibodies recognize shape and charge and not sequence, antibodies can be detected in diseases such as Lupus, Cancer and Alzheimer’s years before significant symptoms appear, and that fully folded functional proteins can be captured and printed for functional protein microarrays. This review highlights why high-quality data is essential for immunoproteomics.
